To The Surface

1.
crawling from these remains. this fractured shell can barely hold the breath that carries these words that could never contain my anger. it is just. and it is swift. this death does not set me free. it could be done so easily. separate these two pieces completely. a cut where the body and the soul would meet. unbind the body from the mind and see. follow the steps down the riverbed. the sun sets on the shoreline. the scene we're painting is so beautiful. the water here is six feet deep.
2.
tear these eyes from their sockets. discover a new way to see. cast them from this world of flesh. discover a new way to see. scry the symbols on paper. trace the glyphs into the sky. work new seeds in this tangle of roots. against the very heavens we conspire. watch us dance. watch us grow. watch us love any who would know. watch us live. watch us die in our promise and we never question why. we're not here to feed you answers from books older than the times. riddled countless since with forgeries. but was always plagiarized. reborn. we rise up from this mud. forlorn. we will count you among us.
3.
FILL THE SKY 02:23
slowly we walk from the altar. singing these hymns placed in parallel rows. naming none but ourselves as our masters. rising with each step as our voices take hold and fill the sky. they are met with fire and the flames pour down on us like rain. the watery graves from which we were born will be buried in this too. we were made for this. to take your pain. to ease your burden. to labor while you point your fingers and disappear when our usefulness has been outlived.
4.
the reflection cast there on the surface tells the whole story of this place. where we stand means nothing to the water. where we stand is owned by greed and profit. so we watch the tides. and we watch the riverbeds rise. can we wait for it to speak to us? we wait for it to wash us away like the poisons we've cast in it. we've come to think we are above it but i'm afraid we're not far from it. when the time comes can we still play the victim? when the time comes the blood of this world is on our hands. when the time comes can we act like we didn't just sit back and watch. when they've stripmined this whole world and there's no one left to exploit. the fire is burning out of control and there's nothing left to destroy. mass death: an acquisition. extinction: a merger. we are all that's left to destroy. when death comes for us, will we meet it on our knees?
5.
WHAT WAITS 02:50
the path we've chosen is clear. lead us down this road. paved with our very own bones. and nothing waits for us but destruction. nothing waits for us at the end but the end. slipping away in memories of green fields and sitting face-to-face. slipping away into memories of mediocracy. a reminder of the good times that were never as good as we were promised. here on our own dragging on these broken bones. on a path that we don't know. nothing waits for us but the collapse of it all. nothing waits for us in the end but the end.
6.
leave this body behind. leave this outdated way of thinking behind. smother me in your glow. so warm and pure. smother me with the only thing that is you. surrounded here by vultures, encircling. they wait their turn to feed on carrion flesh. succumbing to these thoughts, the madness creeps it's way in. a beacon lights my way out and back to you. a flight and a crash on the wings of oblivion. how did we think this could last? they've destroyed our only means of escape. we are here and that doesn't mean nothing. we all laugh and will teach the children to sing. we're still here and that has to mean something. we will love and face what each new day brings.
7.
AS THEY SIFT 01:59
a wasteland of cold so bitter it snuffs out the flame. we could say we're ready. we'd stave off this fate. with all that we'd build we could somehow escape this place. these devices mean nothing to the stars. the buildings that pierce the sky have become a death knell. this monument of suffering dissolving in the vastness of our terrible wake. what will it speak to those whose misfortune it is to come after as they sift through the ruins of this world of excess?
8.
it's worse than we said. we shouted from the bottom of this pit. our swan song fatalist romance. a story in too few parts. it's worse than we said. court disaster every chance we could get. and still surprised when it took us into it's arms. here we are holding out for a hope that never comes. holding out for a hope that we do not deserve. we made this world and now we sink in it. holding out for a second chance that we do not deserve. we dug this grave and now we sleep in it. holding out for a miracle that we do not deserve. the miracle is this lasted as long as it did. the time has come. we dug our graves. we've sealed ourselves in. this poison is our poison. drink it in. the air we choke on is our air. breathe it in. made this whole world a tomb to bury ourselves in.
