We can all agree that Morrissey is an out of touch, unsympathetic character these days; to put it bluntly, dude is fucking awful. But for a lot of people, equally because and in spite of Morrissey’s big mouth, The Smiths represented a call to action against right wing conservatism, a plea for animal rights, the dismantling of toxic masculinity and rigid sexuality, and an aversion to the rote theatrics of modern rock n roll. Morrissey lived long enough to become the villain, but The Smiths lasted only a brief and impactful blip. We chose to cover “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” due to it’s simple, humorous, and sympathetic critique of capitalism, depression, and personal unfulfillment. We also chose it because it slaps.
